Delivering a smart Logistics Solution for the NHS
The client
NHS Project Team working on establishment of new pan-county decontamination service for surgical instruments.
A pathfinder project for the NHS.
The challenge
Centralised decontamination services requiring efficient logistics solution for 9 PCTs comprising over 300 GPs and 100 Clinic locations.
To be compatible with planned solution for acute hospitals.
48 hour turn-round to point of collection.
Compliant with latest 'Carriage of Dangerous Goods' Act.
Environmentally efficient solution.
The solution
Initial interviews with both potential service users and existing transport providers within the NHS organisation revealed a wide range of localised service provision and a variety of transport solutions. The consultation also indicated that provision of a high service level in transport was key to the successful take-up of the new service, especially by the GP community.
Further investigation confirmed the feasibility of developing a vehicle fleet capable of heandling a 'mixed use' service covering the full spectrum of 'low volume, high frequency' deliveries to the Primary Care community by provision of appropriate load segregation.
The requirements for numbers of vehicles and costs for both a dedicated fleet for this service and a fully integrated 'mixed use' solution were modelled using data compiled from a variety of disparate sources. Detailed modelling indicated that significant cost savings could be achieved with the integrated solution, at the same time providing a higher service level than would be viable for a 'stand alone' solution.
This proposed solution was met with enthusiastic support from the local NHS community, and the results of the study incorporated into the business case for the overall project.
Implementation to follow.
Benefits at a glance
