STRATEGY
Cross Industry Benchmarking for a Leading Retailer
The client
FTSE 100 Food Retailer
Engaged in major renewal programme
Seeking innovation in highly competitive market
The challenge
To find innovative opportunities to enhance the supply chain
To apply best practice in other industries
To educate and recommend tools and techniques for implementation
The solution
Our client strongly believed that best practice in the Retail Food industry is formulated by looking at direct competitors and is therefore very inward facing. Benchmarking had been extensive, but only within their industry. Whilst some aspects of their supply chain are world class, expertise from radically different industries had largely been ignored.
The Consultancy Company deployed 4 consultants with in-depth practical experience in the Automotive Industry, Personal Computing, Toys and Industrial Engineering. We overlaid this experience with best practice from the Food Industry in order to identify potential areas of benefit that would be genuinely innovative for our client. To this end, we identified Vendor Managed Inventory, Far Eastern Sourcing and Applications for "Lean" philosophy.
We then benchmarked our own practical experience in the nominated industries against best practice in our client. This was presented back in the form of an interactive workshop that addressed potential opportunities, risks and perceived obstacles. Financial benefits were highlighted where possible, with clear recommendations on an implementation road map.

- Multi Million pound savings identified in the Far Eastern supply chain.
- Clear understanding of how the techniques involved in "lean" supply chains could be applied in a retail environment.
