PROJECT MANAGEMENT
STRATEGY
Creating Consistency for a Building Products Company
The client
A £2 billion global building products company operating in 50 countries
The challenge
Centralisation to create a global IS organisation created the need for more formal and consistent project management
A European ERP project needed improved management
A new IT infrastructure needed to complement the global organisation required structured approaches to initiate and control implementation
The solution
A completely bespoke project management process has been developed based on ProAct.
Starting with the design of the overall methodology we then created a training and coaching programme for the individual project managers in the techniques that will be required over the life of the project, and of course for future projects.
Direct coaching and guidance has been provided for both the Infrastructure Programme Manager and the European ERP team.
The practices have included features from PRINCE2 but encompass pragmatic approaches with minimal essential bureaucracy, and include a toolbox for each manager that allows them to choose the best techniques for the needs of each project whilst retaining the principle of having a common language and approach.
Implicit throughout our support has been the change to a culture that now accepts good project management principles and uses them as second nature.
Practice manuals and training materials are being developed for global roll-out to all IS project staff during the first quarter of 2005.
Benefits at a glance
As a result of our work with them the client gained the following benefits:
- The Infrastructure project is running according to plan.
- External auditors concerns have been overcome.
- IS managers are using common approaches and supporting each other.
- The new methodology is scalable for large and small projects, and flexible for complex and simple projects.
