Lean efficiency in local government
Lean practices can successfully address inefficiencies within the public sector, as they have within the manufacturing industry. The key to successful delivery of lean efficiency in local government is to recognise the complexity of the public sector agenda. Local authorities can benefit greatly from combining the elimination of waste with improved quality and dependability; this impacts on both efficiency and effectiveness. In addition, we see improved focus on the customer and the creation of cross-team synergies, which drives real improvements in employee motivation and morale.
Our lean efficiency approach
The most powerful way to understand the potential of delivering lean efficiency in local government is to experience it: “learning by doing”.
To give organisations an initial experience of Lean we target areas for improvement through Rapid Improvement Events (RIEs) that deliver real, measurable improvement right from the start. At the heart of Lean delivery is the examination of service provision from the customer’s point of view. From this view point we:
- Look at work flow that provides service
- Map the system in a structured way, backed up by data
- Look at waste and its causes
- Redesign flows from the analysis
- "Learn by doing"
- Focus on only doing “value work” which serves customers
- Pilot and test new ways of working using Lean techniques.
